How Mercury Built Our SEO Blog Replacement

James Huang | 2023.05.23

Boosting business pipelines and lead conversion is now more crucial than ever. To help companies of all sizes achieve this, Mercury recently launched a program offering a trial of our SEO optimization suite until August 1. Some of the firms have expressed curiosity about how Mercury uses these tools and signed with us already.

Here's the story of how Mercury's AI SEO optimization tool, Muses, came to be.

Rewind to 2019. Like many other companies, we had a limited marketing budget and had used a PR company's suggestion, paying hundreds of thousands of dollars on outbound marketing and social media posts. The result was like getting a new car and crashing it into a concrete wall: zero leads and a total loss. Technically, the only beneficiary was the marketing PR agency and the KOL.

And thus, inbound marketing and strategy was born.

A Culture of Dogfooding

Many of the products that Mercury designs and builds are a direct result of the challenges our own team is looking to address. Development on our blog platform originally began in 2019.

Initially, it was just a blog platform integrated with Google Cloud Analytics and Google Search Console. We liked it a lot — enough to get excited about what we were building: a better WordPress with high performance.

We began to use our own blog and improve its SEO performance over time, working closely with Ahrefs to gain insight and make things work better. Many people may think that as long as they publish something on the internet, they can always find it on Google. However, in fact, search engines are like libraries. New submissions must go through a certain process, such as algorithm crawling, before they can be put on the shelves (indexed). Otherwise, they will lie in the submission box and cannot be seen by readers.

You must first know the concept of "authority." When Google ranks search results, it considers multiple factors and uses multiple algorithms to evaluate them, and one of the key algorithms is "PageRank."

PageRank was inspired by "citation of papers." The more papers that are cited, the more academic status they exhibit, and the concept of PageRank is similar to this. The algorithm assigns a weight score to each website based on several factors. The higher the weight, the more high-quality and trustworthy the content, and the easier it is to get a good ranking in search results.

It didn't take long for us to find a better way to make our CMS work better than SEO. As soon as our new blog post is on the platform, it takes 6-12 hours to be crawled and indexed by Google. Eventually, we achieved a Mercury Domain Rating of 40 with 850 pages indexed by Google in 12 months.

For organizations that are experiencing limits on their outbound marketing and are tired of paying for SEM, we can provide an easy alternative to gain business pipelines. You can schedule a time here.
